Glasshouse Coffee
Shop
The
Coffee shop provides the central daily meeting place where staff,
students and visitors can come and relax for drinks, lunch and home
baked cakes in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Students get involved
in the whole range of tasks such as food preparation, cooking, making
drinks, serving at the counter, handling money and clearing up.
Our OCN accreditation provides for all levels of ability and each
module involves eight hours a week and runs for six weeks. Central
to our work, all students start with safety, health and hygiene
in the kitchen and learn how to use and maintain the tools. Other
essential tasks include chopping, peeling and grating and those
who are able will be able to cook and serve our customers.
The Coffee Shop provides good quality vegetarian meals using organic
foods and soup and rolls, pizza, pasta and salads appear on the
menu. Students will learn how to use the ovens and hobs as well
as our coffee machine and the till. It is essential therefore that
the ability to serve our customers politely and with good humour
is central to our training course. Some students have also taken
NVQ’s in catering and we are very fortunate to have a visiting
tutor from Stourbridge College to take classes with the students.
We also provide refreshments for the social and cultural events
and Open days that are held at the Glasshouse. This also provides
students with yet another forum for interaction with the public
that has included the local mayor and MP. All of these activities
provide each young person an opportunity to develop a whole range
of skills that in turn helps to build up their confidence.
Working in the Organic shop involves accepting and checking deliveries,
pricing, stock rotation and restocking, reordering, serving customers
and handling money.
The Coffee Shop is open
Monday to Saturday 10 am to 4 pm.
