Underpinning Philosophy

The work of RMET has been particularly inspired by the lives and works of three men, who were 'social entrepreneurs' long before the phrase was coined.

John Ruskin (1819 - 1900) first came to prominence as an art critic, but gradually expanded his analysis to incorporate social, economic and spiritual factors, founding numerous schools, colleges, galleries, shops, etc to promote experimental alternatives to what he saw as the dehumanising tendencies of industrial capitalism.

William Morris (1834 - 1896) championed human-scale values in design, production and marketing, through initiatives ranging from literature, architecture and commerce, to political activism and conservation.

Rudolf Steiner (1861 - 1925) sought to restore the spiritual to the forefront of a human worldview increasingly dominated by materialism. His work has been particularly influential in education, medicine, agriculture and the arts.
