Margaret Docherty: Textiles

I have been involved in textiles as a designer and maker for several years and for the past twelve in my studio at Ruskin Mill.
I make Felt, Hooked Rag Rugs, Carpet Bags and Plant Dyes.

At the moment Feltmaking is very much in vogue so I make many different items such as; wearables, bags, hangings, covers, rugs, 3-D work using Nuno and Shibori techniques. Much of my feltwork has embroidery stitching to enhance detail.

I also make Hooked Rag Rugs and Carpet Bags using velvets, silks, wools and other materials. Over the past few years I have made rugs to commission and have had large pieces in local exhibitions as well as London. Quite a few pieces have gone abroad.

Plant Dyes, which I make from local flowers, are also used in my work alongside my firm favourite, Indigo.

This year, 2003, I completed a project with a local school which involved 110 children designing and making a felt hanging for their new school hall.

Textile holidays abroad is a more recent venture and this year, 2003, we went to the Greek island of Syros.

Leaflets and information about the many courses I run throughout the year are available by telephone: 01453 833320 or write to:
