Still in its development phase, Freeman College opened in 2005 with opportunities for students to design their individual learning needs around a curriculum focused on working with metals. Student numbers increased to 34 by the end of this academic year.
Achievements:
- Acquired four acres of agricultural land at Eyam, on the edge of the Peak District to develop the land based curriculum
- Development of the site for the main college campus; Sterling Works which will greatly expand the workshop and administration space available.
- Purchase of the ground floor of the adjoining Butcher Works to create the Academy of Makers – a centre of excellence in traditional craft metalworking, an artisan bakery and the hub for students to experience commerce and regeneration in action.
- In collaboration with Sheffield Museums & Galleries Trust, the “Living Metal Project” enabled students to talk to metalwork masters, inspiring them to develop and make their own designs.
Collective College Achievements:
Medical &Therapy
We have:
- Enhanced counselling provision for students by appointing psychologists at each college and have increased access to specialist support for those with mental health difficulties.
- Plans to integrate and accent the philosophy underlying anthroposophical therapies by establishing the Hygeia Medical Centre at Freeman College. The medical centre will offer a range of complementary therapy services to staff & students (and in the future to the community of Sheffield) in collaboration with the Sheffield Primary Care Trust.
